I don't know anything about the production of this movie but the third act definitely feels like it's a studio mandated late addition to make the movie 'more exciting for the kids' or whatever. The robot suit just comes completely out of left field and kind of turns the film's conclusion into mindless schlock. The most out-there action sequence is the bullet train fight, which doesn't even go on for too long and it still feels pretty grounded when compared to pretty much any other comic book movie. The idea of Logan being a ronin works really well and the ninja fights are good action scenes that fit the film's tone. The movie looks gorgeous, Hugh Jackman is doing a great job playing Logan, his character is in a dark place, the opening sequence with the bear is neat, the Japanese setting is cool, and the story is actually really interesting until they bring out the dumb shiny robot suit. I remembered I liked the movie until the ending kind of ruined it but I forgot just how good the first ~80 minutes are until I rewatched it over the weekend. James Mangold absolutely nailed it with Logan but he came pretty damn close four years earlier with The Wolverine.
